At the request of San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom, California Govenor Arnold Schwarzenegger activated the National Guard in an effort to curb a city-wide homeless epidemic and stymie the potential outbreak of AIDS, TB and Malaria in areas surrounding Golden Gate Park, the Tenderloin and Civic Center neighborhoods, as well as BART Malls along Market Street (Embarcadero, Montgomery, Powell and Civic Center).
Schwarzenegger said in a statement:
“I have ordered the deployment of troops to high-risk locations to respond to this threat and protect the public. Federal law enforcement will be working in concert with local agencies to house, feed, clean and administer medical care to the homeless within quarantine camps throughout the city.”
Some 300 Guard troops were outfitted with Bio-Hazzard protective gear and Madvac 101 All Wheel Drive Outdoor Vacuums designed to hold up to 120 Gallons of litter. Hundreds of tons of essential medicines and medical supplies as well as camping equipment have been arriving through out the day and await transport by convoy to their assigned destinations this evening. Homeless camp construction is already underway in Cow Hollow, Russian Hill, Presidio Heights, Sea Cliff, Nob Hill, Ingleside Terrace, The Marina District and Pacific Heights.
